Expectations for Starfield’s arrival on PlayStation were sky-high. After all, fans had waited nearly three long years since the game launched on Xbox and PC.
Bethesda’s massive space RPG finally made its long-awaited debut on PS5 on April 7. However, what should have been a moment of pure excitement ended up becoming a huge headache for players.
Yes, the version for Sony’s console arrived with a very serious issue that no one can properly explain.
Starfield turns into a nightmare with crashes on PS5
According to Digital Foundry and a flood of reports on Reddit, Starfield has been constantly crashing on both the PS5 and PS5 Pro.
The issue is so severe that the game completely freezes, and the only solution is to force a restart of the console itself. Digital Foundry’s team tested every possible graphics mode, and the game kept breaking in all of them.
Some users have tried to find their own solutions to get around this bizarre bug. For PS5 Pro players, locking the frame rate at 60 fps or disabling PSSR 2, Sony’s new AI upscaling technology, helped to some extent.
However, that offers no comfort to those playing on the base PS5, who continue to suffer from constant crashes, with no solution to the problem so far.
It’s worth noting that Bethesda already has a rather troubling track record of delivering problematic ports for PlayStation.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Bethesda will act quickly and release an emergency update for the game.
