The anticipation of seeing the Red Dead Redemption franchise reach theaters is one of the biggest dreams for every fan, especially after the massive success of recent adaptations.
Fans have been calling for years for a live-action focused on the western masterpiece. However, Rockstar has always shown strong resistance to bringing its grand universe to Hollywood.
Now, though, a major figure in pop culture has decided to put his own name forward to try to get this project off the ground.
Karl Urban wants to star in a Red Dead Redemption movie
Yes, our forever Billy Butcher from The Boys revealed that he has a big dream. In a recent interview with the British magazine Square Mile, the actor confessed that he is completely fascinated by Rockstar’s franchise.
According to him, the game’s story left a deep impression. And he made no secret about who he would like to play on the big screen if the opportunity arose:
“Come on, John Marston! I would love to play that character.”
And Karl Urban is no newcomer when it comes to game adaptations. It’s worth remembering that he starred in the live-action Doom back in 2005 and, more recently, was cast as the iconic Johnny Cage in the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 2, which hits theaters in 2025. In other words, he’s already familiar with the space and has the credentials for it.
However, the biggest obstacle remains Rockstar. With the two games totaling more than 110 million copies sold worldwide, Take-Two (Rockstar’s parent company) has no financial need to take risks in theaters to achieve success.
Especially after the colossal box office failure of the Borderlands movie, another major Take-Two franchise. As a result, Karl Urban’s dream may still take quite some time to become a reality.
